Arriving via Araxos Airport (no scheduled bus available)

Araxos airport is located 50 Km West of Patras and it is served by several airline companies (e.g., LTU, TUIfly, AirBerlin, SkyExpress, etc), especially in the period May to October. From Araxos, you can reach Patras either by special buses offered by the airline companies (you should confirm this when booking your flight), or by taxi (approx. 40-50 Euros).

Arriving via Athens Airport (skipping the scheduled bus)

Athens' airport is located 250 Km East of Patras. There are regular flights connecting Athens to most European cities. Athens is served by the Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport. There are three ways to reach Patras from Athens:

  • By car. Several car rental agencies operate on the airport. The new "Attiki Odos" high-speed toll motorway connects the airport with Athens and the main Greek highways. Leave the airport following initially the signs to ATHINA and then to ELEFSINA to enter "Attiki Odos". From that point on just stay on the highway following the signs to ELEFSINA, subsequently to KORINTHOS, and finally to PATRA. After Korinthos, the highway splits into two and you must follow the right way (there are signs to PATRA). On this second half of the trip you must be a bit more careful, as the highway gets narrower - one lane plus the emergency one. It is typical to drive on the emergency lane so that other cars (moving faster) can bypass. The total distance between Athens airport and Patras is ~250km and the total cost of the tolls is 8,30 Euros. When reaching Patras, take the exit "PATRA-CENTRE / PORT", and then follow the signs to "Centre-Port / Fast Route".
  • By train. The "Proastiakos" (suburban) railway, operated by "Trainose", connects Athens' airport to the railway network of the rest of Greece operated by the "OSE" company. You can take the train from the airport and then change for the BUS connection at KIATO to reach Patras. Trainose bus services operate between Kiato and Patras (and vice versa) due to ongoing infrastructure works on the railway line between those two stations. The timetable (since 17.04.2014) is as follows:
AIRPORT KIATO PATRA
Departure (by train) Arrival Departure (by bus) Arrival
5:44 7:19 7:30 9:00
6:44 8:19 8:30 10:00
7:44 9:19 9:30 11:00
8:44 10:19 10:30 12:10
10:44 12:19 12:30 14:00
11:44 13:19 13:30 15:30
12:44 14:19 14:30 16:00
13:44 15:19 15:30 17:00
14:44 16:19 16:30 18:10
15:44 17:19 17:20 18:50
16:44 18:19 18:30 20:00
17:44 19:19 19:30 21:10
18:44 20:19 20:30 22:00
You can buy tickets for the trip to Kiato at the Proastiakos station in the airport. This is the small ticket (which costs 14 Euros) for the part AIRPORT-KIATO by TRAIN and you have to validate it before entering the train (at one of the validator machines near the Proastiakos counter). At Kiato you will have to purchase another ticket for the Trainose BUS that will be waiting there (the given train schedules have correspondence with buses for Patras; the bus typically waits for 10 minutes after the train had arrived at Kiato. This is the large ticket for the part KIATO-PATRAS (by BUS) and it costs 10 Euros.
The above timetable shows all train connections between ATHENS AIRPORT and PATRAS. For more timetable information (in case it is needed) you may check the official trainose site.
  • By bus. The "KTEL" intercity bus company has regular buses to Patras. You must first get to the "Kifisos Intercity Coach/Bus Station". You can get there from the airport, either by taxi (approx. 45 Euro) or by taking the X93 express bus (24-hour service) that departs just outside the airport terminal at the Arrival level. The bus stop is next to Arrival Exit 5. The ticket costs 3.20 and you can buy it on the bus or from a kiosk near the bus stop outside the airport. Both these ways of transportation take 65 min to get there, and the bus runs every ~30 minutes (X93 timetable). From Kifisos Intercity Coach/Bus Station there is a bus to Patras almost every 30 minutes. The first bus is at 05:50 and the last at 22:00. Trip time is around 3 hours 10 minutes (or 2 hours 40 minutes for an "express" bus). The ticket costs 17 Euro and you must buy a ticket before boarding. There is a big ticket hall at the east side of the station. Head for the booth with the signs "Achaia" and/or "Patra". There is no need to reserve tickets in advance, you will usually find a ticket for a bus leaving within the next hour. Ask at the ticket booth for directions on how to find the proper bus.

Arriving by Ferry

Several companies with modern ships link Italy with Patras from the ports of Ancona, Bari, Brindisi or Venice. The trip duration from Ancona to Patras is about 20 hours.

Daily transportation to the summer school venue (scheduled bus)

In the morning of each day of the summer school (from September 7th to 12th) there will be a bus scheduled for transportation from the Achaia Beach Hotel, located at the Kastellokampos seaside suburb, to CTI "Diophantus" building, the Summer School venue. The bus will depart daily from Achaia Beach Hotel to the school venue at 08:30 am!

In the evenings, after the conclusion of the daily school session, this bus will be available for scheduled transportation from the venue back to the Achaia Beach Hotel, provided that no Social Event is planned for the day.

In the case of a scheduled Social Event the bus will provide transportation to the event's location and the subsequent return trip back to the Achaia Beach Hotel.

We plan to provide a second bus, if all the school participants can not be served by the first one.

Alternative ways to reach the summer school venue (skipping the scheduled bus)

  • By taxi: ask the driver (most probably not speaking English) to take you to the university (PANEPISTIMIO). When reaching the campus, tell him to follow the street (KAZANTZAKI str.) towards the IFIGENEIA restaurant. The isolated building at the top of the hill is the building of CTI. The taxi costs around 9 Euros.
  • By Bus: ask at the hotel reception to give you directions to the closest bus station for bus No. 6 going to the University (PANEPISTIMIO). You must buy a ticket before getting on the bus. Bus tickets are sold at kiosks. Get off at the first stop in the University Campus and walk along the direction of the bus. After 100m you will encounter the main crossing of the campus (you will see a small church on your right). Keep walking straight ahead (this is Kazantzaki Str.). After 900m, you will encounter the building of CTI at your left.
  • By car from down-town Patras (hotels): locate AG. ANDREOU street (second parallel street from the sea) and drive along it. At some point you will encounter a sign "National Road Patras - Athens", follow it by turning left, and follow the similar signs (or signs to Athens or Athina) until you are on the National Road (highway) from Patras to Athens. After entering the highway, follow the signs to the University of Patras: turn tight to the second traffic light after entering the highway, left at the next crossing, and then right after about 700m (after passing the Indoors Stadium). If you haven't miss any sign, you will cross a river at some point. After crossing the bridge, you are entering the campus. Keep driving straight ahead. Turn right at the first roundabout. At the (functioning) traffic light you have to turn left (this is the main junction of the university with a small church on your left). This is KAZANTZAKI street. Keep driving straight ahead. The isolated building at the top of the hill is the building of CTI.
From down-town Patras to the University Campus allow some 30 minutes during rush morning hours.
